The Alert Parent: I Know More Than You Think!

Click for More

I asked my daughter, Addy, what parents should know about teenagers today. She immediately had a response: “Parents of teens need to understand that we know a lot about things—more than they think, probably. We get it from TV, Internet and our friends.”

Boy, did I know this to be a true statement. Just watching TV now will let tell you that. The innuendoes and outright too-much- information peppered throughout even on a Primetime sitcom are not misunderstood by a teenager.

“A world without tomatoes is like a

string quartet without violins.” – Laurie Colwin

A world without tomatoes? I can’t bear the thought. The homegrown ones are acomin’ in, and hubby G-Man and I are in gustatory heaven – sliced tomatoes with our poached eggs in the morning, BLTs for lunch, a salad heaped with maters with our chicken in the evening.

Is there anything better? Silly question.

Are You A Coper, A Chooser Or A Changer?

Click for More

William Hendricks once identified three basic lifestyles now being lived out on this planet. He called them the lifestyles of coping, choosing and changing. The copers are the folk who possess little or no power and thus spend their days and their nights simply trying to survive amid circumstances they are unable to change. Just getting through the night is their number one objective.

IF ONLY WE KNEW

As it turned out, it really was a chance of a lifetime.
Since retiring and moving to Jackson, Beth and I make occasional runs back to Kosciusko in attempts to tie up those proverbial “loose ends”. On our most recent pilgrimage, my partially empty gas tank provided a reasonable excuse to patronize one of my favorite local businesses, Town Pump—service station/cor-ner coffee shop combo. After settling up inside and treating myself to a cup of the always freshly brew, I was headed back to my car when an imposing black pickup truck wheeled in and jerked to a stop.

The Alert Parent: Braces Off!!

Addy got the good news her braces would come off in early June. It is such a monumentous occasion, Addy’s orthodontist schedules a day every six weeks strictly for his patients who are having their hardware removed. We were both thrilled. For me it meant fewer orthodontist trips and the end of buying soft mushy foods every six weeks. For Addy it meant lots more—including bypassing the minor pain that followed every check-up.

Play ~ still fun after all these years
Here’s a question for you: In this day of blathering televisions and hypnotic computers, do folks still gather to play parlor games? Yep, they do. Recently our grown children were home for several days – here with spouses and kids and dogs – and, just like in bygone years, they actually played together.

Lemon-Scented Quinoa Salad

1 cup quinoa
2 cups chicken broth
½ teaspoon kosher salt
1 can garbanzo beans
½ cup Italian parsley, chopped
½ red onion, chopped

Rinse the quinoa in a fine-meshed strainer. In a medium saucepan, heat the quinoa and broth until boiling. Reduce heat and simmer until broth is absorbed and quinoa fluffs up, about 15 minutes. Quinoa is done when you can see the curlicue in each grain, and it is tender with a bit of pop to each bite. Drain any extra broth and set aside.

For the dressing:

1 garlic clove, minced

Kagan Hearings Surpass World Cup For Most Boring TV Event

The two main points being made by Democrats in support of Elena Kagan's nomination to the Supreme Court merely serve to remind us that Democrats are inveterate liars.
First, it has been repeatedly observed how wonderful it is that Ms. Kagan is "someone who's an intellectual heavyweight who's going to give Roberts a run for the money" -- as Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., put it.
