Faith Is Always Movement And Growth

One thing we can say for sure is that faith has nothing to do with certainty. In the first three verses of Hebrews, I see no certainty, but an uncertainty that keeps one moving. Which tells me that faith is never static.

I remember in 1998 when John Glenn made his final flight into the far reaches of space, I was reminded of Al-dous Huxley’s summation of the glory and pain of being human: “The choice is always ours. Unlike so much of the rest of creation, we humans have been given the gift of freedom, which is to say that we participate significantly in the formation of our own lives and destinies.”

The Alert Parent: Not Right Now

Word count: 597

My first longing to be older and more experienced occurred when I was in elementary school. I was at the health clinic to get a necessary vaccination. As we lined up to receive our medicine, I comforted myself by envisioning the Allyn of the future. “If I were 18-years-old, this wouldn’t even hurt,” I thought. “An 18-year-old wouldn’t be scared or cry.” Of course I was scared and I’m sure I cried.

To Roomba or not to Roomba?

My friend Pam up in Tennessee is all gaga about her new vacuum cleaner, one of those nifty appliances called Roombas that we’ve all seen advertised. I’ve never been interested in purchasing one because, well, I don’t know why. Just never have. Pam, though, is gushy about the thing and insists I get one – she and her husband Marlin have been mesmerized by their new gadget.

Lets Play 'Spot the Democrat'

In the greatest party-affiliation cover-up since the media tried to portray Gary Condit as a Republican, the media are refusing to mention the party affiliation of the thieving government officials in Bell, Calif.
There have been hundreds of news stories about Bell city officials' jaw-dropping salaries. In this poor city on the outskirts of Los Angeles, where the per capita annual income is $24,800 a year, the city manager, Robert Rizzo, had a salary of $787,637.
That's about twice what the president of the United States makes. (To be fair, Rizzo was doing a better job.)

Where’s the beef? Well, here, actually.

I thought that once I got my kids toilet trained and those kids got their own kids toilet trained, I wouldn’t ever have to watch a child sit on the pot again. But I was wrong. Now they’re showing it on television.

I understand that manufacturers want to sell diapers and such, and I suppose the best way to do that is to advertise them on the tube, but viewing folks in the process of taking care of that particular bodily function is not one of my favorite activities. I don’t care how old they are.

Armchair Ponderings: One Born Every Minute!

Contrary to the popular belief that P.T. Barnum coined the phrase “There’s a sucker born every minute,” and I have generally suspected this to be true, but now I have to agree with banker David Hannum who has since been credited with the phrase. But I have to add, if it’s not every minute; it has to be more.

Cheering Immaturity

Rumors of Congressional Democrats privately expressing disapproval of the Obama administration's actions and policies have been given more credence by such things as House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's public criticism of White House spokesman Robert Gibbs. But when two long-time Democratic pollsters, Patrick Cad-dell and Douglas Schoen, called President Obama “cynical” and “racially divisive,” that was a dramatic statement. It was like saying that the emperor has no clothes.

The Blues is in Your Bones

This is a special piece that the publisher of the Gazette wanted me to write on the Chicago Blues in 2006. It ran on April 6, 2006, after the trip to Chicago the previous February. It was a great trip, and a wonderfully different experience. Many people asked me if it would be possible to run the piece again. So I guess you know the answer to that one!
