One way to reduce the wear and tear of Christmas shopping at the mall is to give books as presents. Books can be bought on the Internet, and they can be matched to the person who receives them without having to know that person's measurements.

The New York Times' Nicholas Kristof recently wrote a column about John Brodniak of Oregon, who developed a cavernous hemangioma, causing great pain as blood leaks into his brain.
According to Kristof, Brodniak can't get medical help because we don't have universal health care. Senators who vote against ObamaCare, Kristof said, are morally equivalent to someone who would walk past a man "writhing in pain on the sidewalk."

The most wonderful time
I try to go to at least one Christmas cantata every year, sometimes more than one. There’s something about being in a church with music of the season pouring forth that brings on the spirit of Christmastime whether you’re ready for it or not.

More Melodies of Christmas
“May Christmas bring you happiness,
And a song to fill your heart …”
~ G. A. Schultz
The notes just kept rolling in following my request: “What is your favorite Christmas song/carol, and why?” Readers, brew a cup of hot tea, grab a slab of fruitcake, and reminisce with these wonderful selections.

From what we read in the gospels, no one would describe John the Baptist as having had a sunny personality. I don’t think anyone would describe him as a fun- loving fellow. He was very much what you and I would call eccentric, to say the least. But even though he was not a barrel of fun, John the Baptist remains an impressive figure and an important Advent figure, the voice of one crying in the wilderness.

This season makes you reflect on happenings over the past year and sits you down to think of what has happened to this country and continues to happen due to the laws passed by some of the mentally challenged individuals the voters send to Washington.
On the other side of the coin it’s interesting to see that some states still have the gumption to accept responsibility for their own existence without cowering to Federal and ACLU dictates.

In Tuesday's primary election, Massachusetts Democrats chose as their Senate nominee a woman who kept a clearly innocent man in prison in order to advance her political career.
Martha Coakley isn't even fit for the late Teddy Kennedy's old seat. (What is it about this particular Senate seat?)
During the daycare/child molestation hysteria of the '80s, Gerald Amirault, his mother, Violet, and sister, Cheryl, were accused of raping children at the family's preschool in Malden, Mass., in what came to be known as the second-most notorious witch trial in Massachusetts history.

Remember Lenore Skenazy—the lady who allowed her nine-year-old child to ride the subway home alone with a quarter in his pocket? She was recently on TV talking about overboard parents and a new safety device on the market called the Little Buddy Tracker. The ads for the Tracker say it “keeps tabs on your child at all times, it combines GPS with cellular technology to provide parents with real-time location updates.”
