Editor’s Note: Phi Beta Kappa’s national magazine, “The Key Reporter,” published a review in the Summer 2010 issue of R. C. Wood’s collection of poetry, “Keeper of the Dream,” which was published by the Magnolia Gazette last year. Dr. Inge, a professor of humanities at Randolph-Macon College in Ash-land, Virginia, is a noted authority on popular culture and comic art history. He is the author or editor of over 50 books. A recent national survey and report confirmed what generations of local residents have long believed: that their hometown hospital, Beacham Memorial in Magnolia, ranks among the highest in the state and nation for patient satisfaction of care given! Guy Geller, Beacham Memorial Hospital’s Administrator/ CEO, told the Gazette that each year U.S. News and World Report national magazine rates the country’s hospitals, publishing their findings in U. S. News Best Hospitals. Beacham ranked high nationally according to this report.

No Decision On Property Cleanup

At the August 3 meeting of the Magnolia Board of Aldermen, a lively discussion was held between board members concerning the cleaning of property located in north Magno-lia. Percy and Linda McGowan of 245 Mea-dowood Circle did not show up at the board workshop, which is normal policy, but desired to address the board. According to board procedures, issues pertaining to individuals are normally addressed at the work session.
Alderman James Jones made a motion to have the McGowans speak to the board. They were allowed five minutes to express their views.

Gazette Receives Four Awards At MPA Convention

At the 2010 Mississippi Press Awards Convention, the Magnolia Gazette came home with four awards.
First Place went to Lorna Lyell Chain in the Best Feature Photograph category. The Gazette received two Second Place awards, Best Planned Series of Stories by Lucius Lampton and Donna DeLee and Best Sports Action Photo by Tommy Young. The Best Editorial award was given to Lucius Lampton, who received Third Place.

Thomas Jeffcoat, MD, MS Orthopaedic Society President

Thomas Jeffcoat, MD of the Orthopaedic Clinic of Southwest Mississippi in McComb was recently elected President of the Mississippi Orthopaedic Society at the annual meeting of the state society in Biloxi. Dr. Jeffcoat has been on the active staff of Southwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center in McComb since 1979 and is a former Chief of Staff of the hospital. He is currently serving as Medical Director of the Kings Daughters Wound Care Clinic and is a consulting staff member for Kings Daughters Medical Center in Brookhaven.

Under Age Curfews Will Be Strictly Enforced

Magnolia Police Chief Ray Reynolds contacted the Gazette to inform parents, if their child is under the age of 18 and caught out on the street after curfew, they will be picked up and the parents will be subject to fines imposed by the City Court.
Curfew times are Sunday through Thursday, 10 p.m. (unchaperoned) and Friday and Saturday - 11 p.m. (unchaperoned).

Last Saturday there was an estate sale in Amite County. While there I noticed a bird's nest on the porch. Mama was getting a little nervous as I was trying to get close enough for a good shot. She was ready to feed her babies.
