Grandparents Breakfast Held

On Tuesday, January 12th, Magnolia Elementary hosted a "Granperent's Breakfast" in the library. The featured speaker was Ms. Latoya Selmon of the MS State Extension Service. She presented a variety of information related to "Taking Control of Your Health". Materials outlining various types of health screenings and information about nutrition and exercise were distributed. As part of the John D. Bower School Health Network, Magnolia Elementary partnered with the MS State Extention Service to help educate community members on how to live more healthy lives.

Brett Cullen Lampton with Santa on his birthday. Brett Cullen is the son of Chancie and Brett Lampton of Magnolia and Oxford. His grandparents are Sara Lampton of Tylertown, Earl and Sharon Peek of Kentwood, Tim and Sis Cutrer of Natchez, and Marty Blackwell fo Ponchatoula. Bret Cullen went to Square books, Jr. with his class. Santa was waiting with Mrs. Claus, and after the reading of "Frosty the Snowman" by Mrs. Claus, all the kids rode the bus through the Ole Miss Campus.

What a night! Santa and Snow

What a night--The 2009 Magnolia Christmas Parade was one for the books! Before the parade started, rain was falling. During the middle of the parade it began to sleet. By the time the parade reached the corner of Hwy. 48 and Hwy.51, it was snowing quite heavily. Crowds were sparse, but those who attended had a great time catching candy and playing in the snow. This parade was memorable for all.

Early Snow Blankets Pike County

Southwest Mississippi received one of its earliest snowfalls ever when a winter storm dropped 2 to 4 inches of snow in the area late Friday and early Saturday. Meteorologist stated that this was the earliest snow in Mississippi since Nov. 24, 1938. The snow fell from central Mississippi to southwest Louisiana. 4 inches were reported in Lincoln County, while 2 to 3 inches were reported in Pike.

Shretta Varnado, MSUES Family Resource Management Area Agent was the program coordinator/presenter. Other presenters included Christine Montgomery, MSUES Volunteer Money Mentor, Ernestine Varnado, St. Andrews Mission Parish Nurse, Frances Williams, Pike County 4-H Agent, LaToya Selmon, MSUES Health Area Agent and Navleen Pittman, Lawrence County 4-H Program Associate.

The Magnolia Gazette travels far and wide, and here Captain Mark Lampton of the JAG Corps (U.S. Army) reads the Gazette in Iraq, dreaming of La Mariposa's delicious Fried Green Tomatoes! This photo was taken at the Consolidated Legal Center in Balad, Iraq, in front of a blast wall painted to look like a castle. The blast walls, which are huge concrete shields, frequently have artwork on them. Capt. Lampton of Tylertown owns the Gazette with his brother Dr. Luke Lampton of Magnolia and is its longtime business manager.

Truck-Motorcycle Collision Leaves One Dead At Fernwood/North Magnolia Exit

Tragedy struck in Magnolia last tuesday, Nov. 17, when Magnolia Librarian Sonya Reeves, 46, was killed in a truck-motorcycle accident. The small scooter Sonya was riding, above, collided with a Harvest Haul log truck driven by Kenny Smith, 50, of Tylertown. The log truck was empty and details of the accident are still being investigated. At press time no charges have been filed.
