James Burnett "Jack" Terrell

James Burnett "Jack" Terrell 1932 - 2026 James Burnett (Jack) Terrell, of Liberty, was called home by his Lord and Savior on July 13, 2026. Jack was born September 9,1932, the son of Johnny Bertram and Lottie Jane Roberts Terrell. A graduate of Liberty High School in 1951, he enlisted in the U.S, Airforce from 1951 to 1953.

In 1957, he began his career with the Baton Rouge Police Department as a patrol officer, juvenile detective, and auto theft. He retired as a Lieutenant in 1983 and moved back to his home town. Retirement was fine for a while until Tommy Lee called him for a position with the Gloster police department from 1988 until retiring again in 1997.

His next move was to the Amite County Sheriff's department as the court bailiff from 2000 until 2012. Jack was a proud Southern Baptist, attending Liberty Baptist Church. Normally he was the first one there on Sunday morning studying his Sunday School lesson.

Jack was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police, LA Peace Officers Association, American Legion Post 76, MS Forestry Association, and the NRA. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Betty Laird Terrell; daughter Jackie Bourg (Pat); son Roger Dale; step son Marshall Brister (Sheila); step daughter Darlene Butler (Kelly); 5 grandchildren Michael Posey (Tracey), Dr. Sarah Hudson (Graham), James Bertram Terrell (Lacey), Dixie Daigle (Craig), Justin Brister (Tiffany); 10 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great grandchildren.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Nell McNeil, and a step great grandson Noah Daigle. Visitation was held on July 16, at Liberty Baptist Church from 9AM until time of funeral services at 11AM. Officiated by Rev.

Brock Burch and Rev. David Fortenberry. Graveside service followed in Liberty Cemetery with final prayer by Kelly Butler.
