Brock, Jr. 1942 - 2025

Jewitte J. Brock Jr, 83, passed away Thursday, March 6, at his home in McComb. He was born on February 4, 1942 in Tylertown, to Jewitte and Hilma Fortenberry Brock.

He graduated from Tylertown High School and later attended SMCC. Jewitte retired from Canadian National Railroad after a 40 year career.

Jewitte was married to the love of his life, Ruth Ellen, for 61 years.

He was an avid outdoorsman, especially skilled with the longbow. So skilled, in fact, that he once killed a bear with one in Colorado. His love for archery led him to become a founding member of the Percy Quinn Archery Club as well as serve as an officer for the MS Bow Hunters Association.

Jewitte had a heart for teaching children how to shoot a bow. In addition to teaching all of his grandchildren, he also volunteered at Camp Rainbow, a camp for children with cancer. JJ especially loved taking his grandchildren, or “dirt road sports” as he preferred to call them, for “paw paw days” where he would teach them all about the history of Mississippi.

His love of history inspired his involvement as a past Commander of the Sons of Confederate Veterans. More recently, he filled much of his time traveling the country with Ruth and supporting the Southern Miss Golden Eagles.

Papaw JJ will be greatly missed but he has left us all with such great memories and many nuggets of wisdom.

Jewitte was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Sonja Brock Pezant; brother, Arthur Sullivan Brock; brother-in-law David Holmes; and a surrogate sister Sue Carter.

Jewitte is survived by his loving wife, Ruth Ellen Holmes Brock; daughter, Debra Jackson (Scott); son, James Richard “Boo” Brock (Kelli); grandchildren, Heather Johnston (Justin), Joseph Jackson (Ashley), Brian Brock (Sarah), Madeline Brock, and Mary Ellen Brock; great-grandchildren Jase Johnston, Rhett Johnston, Allie Jackson, Levi Jackson, Everett Brock, and Brenna Brock; brother-in-law, Joe Ben Pezant; sisterin-law, Cindy Brock; brother-in-law, Jewell Holmes (Ann); sister-inlaw Shirley Holmes, as well as a host of nieces and nephews.

Services were held on March 8 at First Baptist Church in Summit. Visitation began at 11 AM with the service immediately following at 1 PM. Pallbearers were Joseph Jackson, Brian Brock, Joshua Kuyrkendall, Benjamin Kuyrkendall, Blake Brock, and Jay Johnson. In leu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of

Jewitte J. Brock Jr. to Blair Batson Children’s Hospital Office of Development 2500 N. State St. Jackson, MS 39216.
