Jo Ann Cook Root

Jo Ann Cook Root 1946 - 2025 Jo Ann Cook Root passed away peacefully on June 30, 2025, at her son’s home in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. A visitation was held on July 7, at McComb Church of Christ from 10AM until services at 12PM. A reception followed the church service. A graveside service was held at Johnson Grove Church of Christ Cemetery at 2:30PM. Bro. Jeff Frank did officiate and Hartman Jones Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. At just 18 years old, Jo Ann married the love of her life, Richard Root, a young U.S. Army serviceman who was later stationed in Germany. Their love story began even earlier, when Jo Ann was a teenager visiting her beloved cousin Shirley. Though technically cousins, Jo Ann and Shirley grew up more like sisters. Shirley was a steady presence and guiding light in Jo Ann’s life, more of a big sister than a cousin, and their love and friendship lasted a lifetime. It was during one of those visits that Jo Ann met Richard, and from the moment she first laid eyes on him, she was smitten. Shortly after marrying, Jo Ann bravely left the comfort of home to join Richard in Germany. Their early years abroad were filled with adventure, growth, and deep love. After returning to the United States, they settled in Detroit, Michigan, where they began their family. In 1969, they welcomed their first son, Steven Mark, followed by Matthew Adam 4 years later. Jo Ann’s devotion to her family was unwavering. She was a woman of great faith, and her passion for teaching young children through Sunday School and the youth ministry group “Lads and Leaderettes” was a defining part of her life. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Richard Root; her son Matthew Adam Root; and her father Harry Cook. Jo Ann is survived by her son Steve Root; daughters-in-law Kim Root and Patricia Root Lawrence; sister-inlaw Linda Root Delarosa; grandchildren Steven Mark Root, Jr., Mary Claire Root, and Addison Elizabeth Root; niece Nicole Delarosa Schmidt (Jessie); and nephew Phillip Delarosa (Kelli). Jo Ann leaves behind a legacy of love, faith, and devotion; proof that true love stories do exist!! A heartfelt thank you to everyone who helped care for Mom and Pop. Your kindness means more than words can express. We’re especially grateful to her church family, her dear neighbors Brad, Marilyn, and Shirley, and her best friend Sue Moak, who welcomed her so warmly to Mississippi. A special thank you to Terri Barnes, who faithfully got her to every appointment, brought her to church, and cared for both her and my dad with love and patience. The Root family is forever thankful for each of you.
