Currie, (R), received a U.S. Senate resolution honoring her and her work as a Mississippi legislator.
The resolution was introduced by U.S. Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith, (R), and was recorded as follows: “Thanks to the efforts led by my fellow Mississippians, the governor’s office, and the Mississippi State Legislature, we live in the Dobbs era.” “The entire process that brought us to the historic overturning of Roe v. Wade, almost 3 years ago, began with the introduction of a bill in the Mississippi State Legislature called the Gestational Age Act. My dear friend, State Representative Becky Currie, is responsible for this introductory legislation, which turned out to be the catalyst for such great change in our nation.”
Senator Hyde-Smith continued, “I would like to read into the record a resolution honoring her role in this historic moment. Today, I am introducing a Senate resolution honoring the Mississippi Gestational Age Act.” “Whereas, on January 15, 2018, Mississippi State Representative Becky Currie of Brookhaven introduced the Gestational Age Act to protect unborn children from elective abortions after 15 weeks’ gestation. “Whereas, on March 19, 2018, the Gestational Age Act was passed by the Mississippi Legislature, approved by Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant, and enacted into law. “Whereas, in May 2021, the United States Supreme Court agreed to review Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization as a challenge to the constitutionality of the Gestational Age Act. The question before the court was whether all pre-viability prohibitions on elective abortions are constitutional.” “And whereas, on June 24, 2022, the United States Supreme Court issued a historic decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, holding that the Constitution does not confer a right to abortion. Roe and Casey must be overruled, and the authority to regulate abortion must be returned to the people and their elected officials.”
Senator Hyde-Smith continued, “Now, therefore, I resolve that the U.S. Senate express profound gratitude to Mississippi State Representative Becky Currie for introducing the catalyst that ultimately brought about the historic victory of overturning Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey, and honors life-affirming states across the country that have enacted laws aimed at valuing and protecting the inherent dignity of every mother and unborn child.” “Thank you, Mr. President, and I yield the floor.”
