Friday a gathering, that usually takes place at the house of Sally Johnson, met at the home of Sandy Pearson. Sandy resides at Camp Topisaw on the estate of David and Edie Varnado.
The evening’s festivities began with a delicious meal of chili con carne, spicy Mexican cornbread, and an angel food cake with lemon glaze provided by the hostess. Keith Pitre of Magnolia had an offering of iced brownies and raspberry bars from the Broad Street Bakery in Jackson to add to to the spread.
David Varnado and his lovely wife Edie graciously provided the assembled guests with a bonfire in their outdoor patio area’s fire pit.
Elizabeth Woodall of the Peoria community in Amite County provided marshmallows for those who wanted to perfect their roasting skills. Reggie Joseph (Magnolia) declared that it was his first time ever to roast a marshmallow.
Those gathered were shown various stars, planets, and constellations by David. Jackie Minette (Pelahatchie) shared the information that because of its size Jupiter’s gravitational pull is the force that helps hold all the solar system’s planets in place.
At the conclusion of the evening guests had the opportunity to participate in a plant drawing in which two plants were given to each. As many know, David has an extensive collection of succulents. In fact, on Facebook, he has a page devoted to them called “Sir Succulent”.
Among lucky recipients were Jerry Padgett (Magnolia) who received a variegated rubber plant, Phyllis Faust (McComb), Martha Boyd (Holmesville) one of whose plants was an aloe called “lizard lips”, Keith Pitre (Magnolia), Melissa Johnson (formerly of Ocean Springs, recently moved to Magnolia).
The assembled all agreed that this was a delightful evening and are grateful to Sandy and the Varnados for such a great party.
