Bears Shine in 5-1 in Over Oxford of Emory
Still riding high following Thursday’s big win over Tougaloo to open the regular season, the Bears hoped to carry that momentum over in a quick turnaround as they traveled to Birmingham, AL Saturday to face Oxford of Emory.
And they did just that, getting goals from four different players including two from Justin Ruiz in a 5-1 win over the Eagles.
“We were definitely happy to get the win and get some confidence moving forward,” Southwest head coach Zach Mills said.
The Bears (2-0) built a 3-1 lead by halftime as Rory Humprhey , Ruiz and Sergio Padin all scored goals with Joel Bastida assisting on the first two and Jeysson Cruz on the third.
Ruiz shined once again in the second half with his second goal of the match and third already this season making it a 4-1 advantage for Southwest. Once again, Cruz provided the assist.
The Bears rounded out the scoring later in the half as Jason Dykes found the back of the net on an assist by Nico Fischer.
In the goal, Loan Marin had five saves on six shots. He played 80 of the 90 minutes in the match with Holden Helms finishing it out while also providing two saves himself.
The Bears return to action Friday at home hosting Pearl River in a non-conference slate.
