Mississippi Republican Gov. Tate Reeves could be headed back to the banking world after the state’s November general election.

One poll shows Reeves is in disfavor with many Mississippi voters, while another survey indicates he is trailing his main Democratic opponent for the state’s top job.

A poll conducted in January by the Mississippi Today media operation and Siena College shows a majority (57-percent) of Mississippians would support “someone else” over Reeves’ reelection bid for the n . . .

Felder’s Cherry Red Garden Paint

If this winter has shown me anything, it is that nearly everyone thinks their garden problems are worse than mine. Wailing about their losses, they don’t understand that I feel their pain through my own grief.

But I’m not letting it get me down. Not being one to wring my hands wishing for spring, I subscribe to the “Gather ye rosebuds while ye may” philosophy of doing what I can to enjoy the here and now; yeah, things could be better, but understanding they could also be much worse, I stoica . . .

This past Saturday’s Enterprise Journal opinion page, which I read on a daily basis, featured a column by Patsy R. Brumfield concerning a tremendous litter problem in McComb. I completely agree with portions of that column, but I have to take exception to her suggested solutions. Instead of holding retailers solely responsible, maybe we need to look at a solution to eliminate the actual littering by going to the litterers.

Friday my wife, a friend and I rode the back country roads to Slidell . . .

What’s Up Magnolia?
Housekeeping

We are both retired teachers who raised two children each. We had assumed that the reason that we had not kept up with the housekeeping chores was because we were busy working at our paying jobs and raising kids. That certainly was always our excuse for smudgy windows and gritty floors. Now there are no small children in our houses... or big ones either. Having retired from the workforce we enjoy much more leisure than at other times in our lives, yet never has housekeeping seemed to “spark . . .

Pasta has Been on Americans’ - and my - Mind

“After extensive efforts, we regretfully announce that Ronzoni Pastina is being discontinued.” The Jan. 3 announcement from the long-time pasta manufacturer sent shock waves through America. Headlines like, “Pastini fans are devastated!” and “Mourning continues for pastini” dominated the internet and air waves for days. Despite being a pasta lover, I’ve never tasted pastina. A little research reminded me why it’s never been on my must-try list.

Pastini actually means “little pasta.” I like . . .

Felder’s Snowdrops

Just saw my first snowdrops of the season, which alerts Southern horticulturists that I am nowhere near my Mississippi garden, where real snowdrops grow poorly if at all.
True snowdrops, named Galanthus, are winter blooming bulbs with little teardrop shaped white flower buds that open up with two or three flattened outer “wings” and tiny green hearts on the smaller inner petals; they need a longer, cooler season than do our very common snowflakes (Leucojum), which have little green dots on be . . .

The Praise Team opened our morning service with praises to our Heavenly Father. Bro. LaVerne Summerlin had the opening prayer, welcome and announcements. We had a very good number of people in attendance.

Bro. LaVerne’s message was “The End of Time: Part 3” from Matthew 24:6-14. The evening message was “Time of Suffering” from Revelation 2:8-11.

The bon fire and fellowship that was planned for Saturday night was cancelled because of the rain. Will be scheduled for another time.

Why I love Mississippi

I first learned of Mississippi when in the early grades I learned to spell it like many other young students, with the,” Mi crooked letter, crooked letter I, and the rest.” My next foray into Mississippi was in December 1954 when as an eighteen-year-old, fresh out of Air Force basic training in Sampson Air Force Base, Geneva, New York, I boarded a Greyhound Bus for this unknown place called Biloxi, Mississippi. My next few months were to be spent at Keesler AFB to learn all there was to know ab . . .

Now 5-Years-Old, the Two Mississippi Museums are Making this State a Better Place

Mississippi’s 216th anniversary as a state arrives in December. Its Two Mississippi Museums have just turned 5-years-old.

You’d think packing more than two centuries of life into just two historical halls of that young age would be impossible. However, the Mississippi Department of Archives and History has met the challenge.

There’s a lot of history squeezed into those buildings on North Street, near the Old Capitol.

Some of it is drop-dead stunning in its beauty.

Forgetting one of my “favorites” from the Top Restaurant Meals and Supermarket Products of 2022” list – the Burger-Burger at the Biloxi restaurant by the same name - triggered a train of thought that ultimately led to a list of some of the best sandwiches in Mississippi. In case it appears I’m being forgetful again – after all, isn’t something called “Burger-Burger” actually a, well, burger? The answer is…”not really” and here’s why.

Felder’s Indoor Plants:
Mid-Winter Maintenance Tips

Just like people, cooped up indoor plants can use a midwinter break. But unlike humans’ Seasonal Affective Disorder, tropical plants have their own brand of misery andcan’t just waltz out the door for a stretch in the sunshine.
The other day I shuffled my moribund-looking house bound plants, mostly small pots of succulents and heirloom favs but also some back-straining larger ones, outside to get perked up with a dose of gentle winter solar radiation, a breath of humid fresh air, and a good . . .
